Pavers are a base trade in a sand county
Everything west of the interstate here sits on old coastal soil — sugar sand, shell layers, and a water table that rises to meet the summer rain. Pour a rigid surface over ground like that and the ground wins eventually. Pavers play a smarter game: hundreds of interlocked units over a properly compacted base flex with the ground, drain the cloudbursts through their joints, and stay serviceable for decades. When something ever does settle, you lift that spot, re-screed, and re-set the same stones — no seams, no patches, no tear-out.
That’s the whole trade, done honestly: excavation to the right depth, base rock brought in and compacted in lifts, a screeded sand bed, tight-jointed pavers, edge restraint, and polymeric sand locked in at the end. Skip any one of those and the driveway telegraphs it within two summers. We don’t skip.

How a job runs
Measure, mark utilities, settle pattern and border on paper — and put the number in writing before a shovel moves.
Excavate, then compact crushed base in lifts. This is the step you never see again and feel every year.

Pavers over a lazy base will. That’s a base failure, not a paver failure — the reason our process is base-obsessed, and the reason repairs on our work are rare and small. And unlike rigid surfaces, a settled paver spot is a half-day fix with the same stones.
